A flash of white in his peripheral vision sent him sprawling to the ground with astonishing force. The cannon blast echoed through the clearing, followed by the groan of metal hitting the ground.
Nonsensical screams rang in Optimus' dazed audials. He struggled onto his elbows and looked over his shoulder to see what had happened.
Arcee and Bumblebee were kneeling on the ground, frenziedly mopping up energon that glowed sickly blue on scratched red and white metal.
Ratchet coughed weakly, silently mouthing a name and reaching a hand desperately for its owner.
In one fluid motion, Optimus whirled up and around, running across the few yards that seemed like miles. His fingers stretched to intertwine with the medic's, but too late. Ratchet's teal blue optics grayed and his hand fell with a dull thunk to the dust. Optimus froze, grasping air, staring in horror at the smoke rising from his friend's spark chamber.
Wordlessly he opened his arms. Arcee and Bumblebee didn't seem to understand, too overcome with shock, so Optimus moved forward and drew Ratchet away from them, whispering an anguished plea the others didn't hear. Cradling Ratchet's head against his shoulder, Optimus rocked back and forth as his own muffled sobs tore his spark asunder.
